Save percentage (SV%)
SV% = saves ÷ shots against. A save percentage above .900 is solid in most leagues; NHL starters live around .900–.920.
Goals against average (GAA)
GAA = (goals against × game length) ÷ minutes played. Game length is 60 for full-length games — set it to your league's actual game length (many beer leagues play 45-minute running time).
Shooting percentage (SH%)
SH% = goals ÷ shots on goal × 100. League-average shooting is roughly 9–11%; snipers run 15% or better.
Points per game (P/GP)
P/GP = (goals + assists) ÷ games played. A point per game is the classic benchmark for a top scorer at any level.
The formulas, explained
Hockey's core stats are simple ratios, but the details trip people up: save percentage is traditionally shown to three decimals with no percent sign (.923, not 92.3%), GAA has to be normalized to your league's game length, and shooting percentage only counts shots on goal — misses and blocked shots don't factor in.
These calculators use the same formulas as the NHL and IIHF, so the numbers you get here match what any league site would publish. If your league still tracks stats on paper, Hockey Line calculates all of this automatically from live game scoring.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good save percentage in hockey?
- In the NHL, .900 is roughly average and .920+ is elite. In beer league and rec hockey, shots are harder to track cleanly, but anything above .880 usually means your goalie is keeping you in games.
- How is GAA calculated in hockey?
- Goals against average = (goals against × game length) ÷ minutes played. It normalizes a goalie's goals allowed to a full game, so a goalie who allows 3 goals over 90 minutes of 60-minute hockey has a 2.00 GAA.
- What counts as a point in hockey?
- A point is a goal or an assist. Up to two assists are awarded per goal, so one goal can produce three points across three different players.
- Do empty-net goals count against save percentage or GAA?
- No. Goals scored into an empty net are not charged to a goalie's save percentage or GAA, because the goalie was not on the ice.
